James Thomas Tatum, 69, passed gently away to his eternal home on Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, in Lynn Shores Manor. The Rev. Tatum was a native of Greenville, N.C., the son of William and Mary Thigpen Tatum. He was a retired employee of the International Longshoremen's Association, Local 1248. He was an active, dedicated member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in the Berkley section of Norfolk for more than 40 years, where he served on the Deacon's Board for more than 30 years and became an ordained minister. He was the founder and organizer of the Widows and Widowers Club and past director of the NAACP membership drive at Antioch. Left to cherish his memory are his lovely wife of 43 years, Lillie F. Tatum; six children, Jessie Battle, Thomas Tatum, Samuel Tatum, Troy Tatum, Christal Burris and Dorothy Stith; two sisters, Verna Langley and Jean Moore; a brother, Leroy Tatum; seven grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church by Dr. I. Joseph Williams, pastor. The burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery , Norfolk. Earthly remains may be viewed from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Metropolitan Funeral Service, Norfolk. Family and friends will assemble at 8028 Glen Road, Norfolk, at 10 a.m. Saturday for the procession to the church.
