Tebault, Auditor of the City was dead, he having passed at 7 a.m. He had been extremely ill for some days, and his demise was not unexpected, death ensuing from kidney disease. Mr. Tebault was one of the most popular men in the city, and his death will be received with general regret. He leaves a widow, formerly Miss Selina Evans, daughter of Captain Richard Evans, of the United States Revenue Marine Services, also a son and daughter. The deceased had long been identified with the business and municipal interest of the city. He will be greatly missed. No one came within his acquaintance without being impressed with his sterling integrity and courteous mien. He was a gentleman in the truest sense, his kindliness of disposition being a marked characteristic. He was of quiet and retiring demeanor, mild of manner, careful of speech, constant at business, a true friend and a faithful public officer. He had held the position of City Auditor for a number of years and since that office was established. He was raised in the counting room of Messrs. Smith, Fisher & Co., an old Norfolk firm of merchants and importers. Later on he was in the fine grocery and wine business with Mr. Thomas R. Beardon on Roanoke Square, and afterwards went into the same business for himself on Main Street, near Bank. During the war he was in the office of the Secretary of the Confederate Treasury at Richmond. Soon after the war he was elected Secretary and Treasurer of the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal Company, and held that position in addition to the city Auditor, when he died. The deceased was in the 63rd year of his age, and resided at No. 143 York Street. He was a native of Charleston, S.C., but came to Norfolk when young. The death of Mr. Tebault, while causing a great loss to Norfolk, comes with crushing force to his immediate family, for he was a devoted husband and father.
