Temple, 72, of 1031 Gault street, who for some time had slept crouched on his knees with head resting upon the edge of his bed, was found dead in that position early Wednesday morning, Oct. 18. It is presumed that death came as he slept during the night. He was fully clothed when discovered. Mt. Temple was a native of Norfolk and was well known in the city. For a number of years he had been a member of St. John’s AME Church, and had served in the United States Navy. Funeral services were held from Morning Glory Funeral Home Friday, Oct. 20, with St. John’s pastor, the Rev. H. M. Shields, officiating. Except for a lodger, Mr. Temple lived alone, his wife having preceded him to the grave years ago, and his son, William F. Temple Jr. serving overseas in the armed forces. The aged man figured in the news a year or more ago when a male lodger is alleged to have felled him in the hallway of his home in an attempt to rob him. He is survived by, other than his son, a sister, Mrs. Christine Jackson, a niece and two great nieces, all of Norfolk.
