Born Aug. 5, 1921, he was an honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran and served in World War II with the Combat Engineering Battalion No. 1284. He retired after 38 years of service with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth. He was predeceased by his son, John David Thatch. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 44 years, Diane Wroten Thatch; his son, Vincent S. Thatch and wife, Melinda; four daughters, Theresa A. Trainum and husband, Kevin, Elizabeth D. Wehmer and husband, Robert, Mary C. Johnston, Veronica M. Bryan and husband, Christopher; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by Fr. Brian Rafferty. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Norfolk. Friends may join the family for a Rosary service today at 7 p.m. in the funeral home with visitation following until 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church's debt reduction fund, the American Cancer Society or the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.
