Maria and the late Mr. William A. Thom, Jr., in the 17th year of his age. Funeral services at the residence, 501 Stockley Gardens, THIS (Saturday) AFTERNOON AT 5 o'clock. ************* William Alexander Thom Jr., son of Mrs. F. Maria and the late Dr. W.A. Thom, died at the Norfolk Protestant Hospital at 6:30 o'clock yesterday morning of mastoiditis, after a few days illness. Young Thom came home from the Virginian Military Institute a short time ago and was suffering with a slight pain in his ear. This trouble became aggravated when he went in bathing at Willoughby Beach, where his mother has a summer cottage. Such was his condition that it became necessary to summon a physician. Dr. Cannon was called and discovered that an operation was imperative and Mr. Thom was taken to the Protestant hospital, where on Wednesday the operation was performed. At the onset of the operation it was known that the condition of the patient was serious and he rapidly grew worse until relieved of his suffering by death yesterday morning. The deceased was a young man of splendid character and had numerous friends here and at the Virginia Military Institute, where he was a student. The funeral will be held from the residence, 501 Stockley Gardens, Ghent, at 5 o'clock this afternoon.
