He was a native of Portsmouth and had been a resident of this city for 10 years. He was a charter member of Grimes Battery, Portsmouth, and served with that unit during the Spanish-American War. He was a member of the Men's Bible Class of Lafayette Presbyterian Church. Mr. Thomas was the son of John H. and Margaret E. Thomas and is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Margaret V. Harvey, Norfolk; Mrs. L. W. Rosenburg, St. Louis; Mrs. Pearl Stevenson, Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Ruby Langhorne, San Pedro, Cal; two sons, John R. Thomas, Washington, D.C., and Chester Alton Thomas, Port Arthur, Texas; 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home of E. Lee Cox & Bro., 631 Westover Avenue, tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Burial will be in the family plot in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
