J. Thomas of Norfolk died in Philadelphia Monday night after a lingering illness, in the 78th year of his age. The deceased was born on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, but had been for a long number of years a resident of this city. He was the founder of the well known Main street shoe house of S.J. Thomas & Co., from which he retired some years ago. He was held in high esteem in the community as a man of upright character and unflinching integrity. He went to Philadelphia for medical treatment 11 years ago and had been there ever since, his health continuing gradually to fail. He was thought a short time ago to be improving, but recently he showed signs of rapid decline and passed away as stated above. He is survived by a widow and one daughter, Mrs. C.W. Northern of Norfolk; a brother and two sisters, who reside at Cheriton on the Eastern Shore, Benjamin Thomas, Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Savage. The remains will arrive here this morning. ************************************************************ The remains of the late S.J.
