Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Wednesday, February 21, 1996 
Mr. John Thomas, 75, a former resident of Norfolk, and the husband of Mrs.
Floretta Sears Thomas, died Friday, Feb. 16, 1996, at the University of Virginia
Hospital, in Charlottesville, Va.

Mr. Thomas was born in Christianburg, Va., and resided in Staunton, Va. He was
the seventh of 13 children born to the late King Thomas and Estelle Thompson
Thomas. He served in the pre-World War II with the U.S. Navy, and he spent over
25 years as a member of the U.S. Merchant Marine Service. He was a former member
of First Baptist Church, Bute Street. Mr. Thomas was widely acclaimed for his
culinary skills as well as his barbering skills. He formerly owned the Thomas
Barber Shop on Calvert Street at the corner of Chapel Street.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Justice John Charles Thomas
and Dr. Clarence Walter Thomas, both of Richmond, Va.; two daughters, Estelle L.
Thomas of Richmond, and Jerelene Thomas Corcoran of Norfolk; 10 grandchildren;
two brothers, Houston Thomas and Walter Thomas of Staunton; and two sisters,
Catherine Veney and Stella Moody of Youngstown, Ohio; sister-in-law, Hattie
Thomas of Staunton; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

A viewing will be conducted Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. A wake will be held at
Riddick Funeral Home Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held
Friday at the funeral home at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery . The
family will be at 7404 Stony Run Road in the Larrymore Lawns section of Norfolk.
