Virginian Pilot April 25, 1963

James E. Thornton, of 935 Charlotte St. died Monday in his home after a long 
illness.
A native of Warrenton, N.C., he was a son of James E. Thornton Sr. and Mrs. 
Julena Thornton and the husband of the late Mrs. Ella Thornton.
He was a retired custodian and trustee of Rose of Sharon Baptist Church.
Surviving are six sons, James A. Thornton, William E. Thornton, Clyde Thornton 
Sr., Themithy Thornton, Junius Thornton and Roland Thornton and five daughters, 
Mrs. Frances Mitchell, Miss Thelma Thornton, Mrs. Ella Hyman, Mrs. Elizabeth 
Hodges and Mrs. Versary Norman, all of Norfolk; 30 grandchildren and 26 great-
grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Rose of Sharon Baptist 
Church by the Rev. W.F. Evans. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with Hale 
Funeral Home in charge.
