Thornton Jr. departed this life Oct. 5, 1999, at approximately 2 p.m. William was born Jan. 5, 1937, in Norfolk, to the late William E. Thornton Sr. and Verona Thornton. William was the husband of Lula Thornton for more than 35 years. He was a graduate of the Class of 1955 of Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk and he attended Norfolk State University. He was a loyal and conscientious employee of Norfolk Southern Railroad and retired in January 1999, after more than 37 years of service. Although he was a member of First Baptist Church, Lambert's Point where he served on the Missionary Circle and Male Usher Board; for the past four years, he enjoyed attending Calvary Revival Church with his family. Mr. Thornton was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a faithful friend to many, especially to the friendless. Mr. Thornton leaves to celebrate his homegoing his wife, Lula Thornton; two sons, Terrance A. Thornton and his wife, Tina, of Lithonia, Ga., and William Garrie Thornton of Chesapeake; one daughter, Terri Arnell Thornton of Chesapeake; two granddaughters, Teryn Christina Thornton and Tia Arnae Thornton; his mother, Verona Carter Thornton of Norfolk; two brothers, Robert Earl Thornton of Norfolk and Carter Vernon Thornton Sr. and his wife, Celestine, of Chesapeake; one uncle, Roland Thornton; five aunts, Elizabeth Hodges, Versaray Norman, Frances Mitchell, Victoria Dodson and Havanna Blount; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at noon Saturday at Calvary Revival Church with Pastor Courtney McBath officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery . The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. on the day of the service. Graves Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
