She was a tireless and devoted worker who loved her ``children'' and cherished friends and family each and every day. Born in Severn, N.C., she was the widow of Elwood P. Thornton and a member of the Lambert's Point Civic League. She retired after 30 years of domestic service to Capt. and Mrs. John Matthews. She was a member of St. Mark RZUA, 1515 Colonial Ave., Norfolk, where she was a member of the Pastor's Aid, Allie Lamb Nurses Club and the Missionary Circle. She was predeceased by her parents, Lila Joyner Gary and Kenneth Joyner and three sisters, Mary G. Mann, Loretta Gary and Mollie Allgood. She is survived by a sister, Willie M. Ridley of Palmyra, N.J.; a brother, Jack Gary Jr. of Willingboro, N.J.; one god son, T. Timothy Porter of Norfolk; and 13 nieces, two nephews, 26 great-nieces and -nephews and nine great-great-nieces and -nephews. A funeral will be held Saturday at noon at St. Mark RZUA, Norfolk, by the Rev. Ben Thomas with burial in Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Granby Street Chapel, is in charge.
