Mrs. Thornton was born Aug. 22, 1916 in Havelock, N.C. She was the widow of William Ezell Thornton Sr. and the daughter of the late Elijah Sr. and Victoria Carter. She was employed with several families in the Tidewater area as companion, baby sitter and housekeeper. She assisted in the rearing of her grandchildren while their parents were employed. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church Lambert's Point of Norfolk. She served on the Deaconess Board, Missionary Circle and the Female Senior Usher Board until her illness prevented her from serving. She was also a former Sunday school teacher. She was a former member of Park Place Center Senior Citizen's Group and the Lambert's Point Civic League. In addition to her husband, William E. Thornton Sr., she was predeceased by her son, William E. Thornton Jr.; two sisters and six brothers. She leaves to cherish her memory two sons, Robert Earl Thornton and Carter Vernon Thornton Sr. and wife Celestine; seven grandchildren, Robin Charles (David), Elder Terrance Thornton (Tina), Terri Thornton , Michael E. Thornton (Donna), William G. Thornton , Nicole Thornton and Carter Thornton Jr.; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Elijah Carter Sr.; a sister, Victoria Dodson and husband Walter Dodson Sr.; a daughter-in-law, Lula Thornton ; a special daughter, Dolly Thornton ; two brothers-in-law, Roland Thornton and Matthew Blount; five sisters-in-law, Mary Carter, Eva Carter, Pearl Carter, Elizabeth Hodges and Versaray Norman; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A funeral will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Lambert's Point, Norfolk, by Pastor Anthony Paige. The family will receive visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carter Thornton Sr., 916 Mathews Court, Chesapeake. Hale Funeral Home is in charge.
