A native of Warrenton, N.C., Mr. Thornton was a graduate of Hampton Institute and the Eckels College of Mortuary Science. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and served both stateside and in the Southwest Pacific. Mr. Thornton along with his wife, Gladys Hale Thornton, were the owners and operators of Hale Funeral Home, Ballentine Blvd., Norfolk. Mr. Thornton was a member of the Virginia Funeral Directors Association and had served on the VFDA Board of Directors and on many committees, most recently the Credentials Committee, and had served as a welcoming host at the Credentials Desk at the VFDA Annual Convention. Additionally, he was a member and past president of the Tidewater Funeral Directors Association. Mr. Thornton was a member of the Virginia Morticians Association and served two terms as their president in from 1954-55 and 1955-56. He had served on the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority Board of Commissioners; Norfolk Community Hospital Commission; Norfolk Recreation Commission; Norfolk Community Chest; YMCA Board of Directors, Advisory Board of the Charlotte Street Recreation Center; Virginia Association of Housing and Community Development; Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce; and National Federation of Independent Business. Mr. Thornton was a member and vestryman for many years at Grace Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Aeolians Social Club, Norfolk City Golf Advisory Commission and Senior Golfers of Virginia. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons. Franklin W. Thornton Jr., program director, mortuary science program, John Tyler Community College, Howard H. Thornton and Richard B. Thornton; a sister-in-law, Mable Ferebee; a granddaughter, Kaili Welch; and a grandson, Dylan Hale Thornton. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery . The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Hale Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to Mrs. Gladys H.
