She was born in Beaufort, N.C. on April 25, 1915, the sixth of ten children born to Paul Bryan Beachem and Elizabeth Hunnings Beachem. After completing high school she moved to Norfolk, VA. to live with an aunt and uncle in order to study tailoring with Mr. Nicholas Albano. While there she met her future husband, Harry Vincent Tocce. Harry and Irene had two children ; Joanne Elizabeth and Harry Vincent, Jr. In addition to her role as wife and mother, Irene spent many years working and volunteering on church, school and civic projects. She devoted many years to St. Mary's Home for Disabled Children, working closely with the occupational therapist to provide clothing and assistive devices for the children. She also volunteered for many years as a wardrobe assistant at the Virginia Opera Association. She was honored for her service to the VOA with a walk-on role in a production of La Boheme. In recent years, Mrs. Tocce was active as a member of St Mary's Auxillary Board and the Downtown Bible Study Group. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers and three sisters. She is survived by her two loving children, four grandchildren, a greatgrandson, two brothers Thomas Beachem of Beaufort, N.C. and Cedric D. Beachem of Silver Spring, Md. and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday April 11, 2012 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Father Joseph Metzger officiating.
