Tompkins This old and well known citizen of Norfolk died at his residence on Cumberland Street yesterday afternoon, at four o'clock, in the sixty-ninth year of his age. Mr. Tompkins was for many years prominently engaged in the undertaking business in this city. In 1878 he went to Memphis, Tenn. as a volunteer nurse to yellow fever patients, was attacked by the disease and was very near losing his life. His death was occasioned by a wound he received some months since from a knife with which he was cutting a piece of wood in his shop on Bank Street, and which slipped and entered his thigh, penetrating the femoral artery. He leaves a family to mourn his loss. The funeral will take place this afternoon at five o'clock. ************ TOMPKINS - At his residence, on Cumberland Street, May 20th, 1880 at 4 p.m., J.J. Tompkins The funeral of this well known and highly esteemed citizen whose demise we announced in Friday's issue of The Virginian, took place from his late residence yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock and was attended by a large number of friends of the family and also by Norfolk Lodge No. 1, A.F. & A.M. and Grice Commandery Knights Templar, of which the deceased while in life was an honored member. The solemn service was conducted in accordance with the forms of the Protestant Episcopal Church by the Rev. Robert Gatewood, who briefly and appropriately alluded to the life and character of Mr. Tompkins. He paid a most deserved tribute from a personal knowledge of his many excellent and amiable traits, particularly referring to his modest and unselfish charity. His remarks were deeply affecting and brought tears to the eyes of many in the audience. At the conclusion of the service at the house the remains were conveyed to the hearse and the procession formed, headed by the Masonic fraternity, wended its way to Cedar Grove Cemetery, where the remains were deposited to the tomb surrounded by weeping relatives and sorrowing friends with the solemn and impressive church service and the beautiful rites of the Masonic fraternity to await the resurrection of the just. Peace to his ashes. The following gentlemen acted as pallbearers: Norfolk Lodge - Dr. E. Cuthriell, K.H. Old, C.J. Oheim, M.J. Bell, Esqs. Knights Templar - Messrs. T.W. Henderson and J.T. Redmond.
