CHILD, 9, DIES AFTER BEING HIT BY PICKUP ON TIDEWATER DRIVE

A 9-year-old boy died Thursday after he ran in front of a pickup truck, police 
said.
Christopher P. Toombs, of the 100 block of Cherry St., was struck about 3:10 p.m., 
while crossing the 7900 block of Tidewater Drive, police said.
The driver of the pickup truck was identified as Darla Ann Epema, 21, of the 1100 
block of E. Leicester Ave. She was not hurt.
Toombs, a student at Holy Trinity School, had stopped for traffic while attempting 
to cross the street, witnesses said. He "then bolted in front" of the oncoming 
pickup, police said.
Epema hit her brakes and attempted to swerve to avoid the boy, but failed, police 
said.
The boy was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was pronounced 
dead at 3:43 p.m.
No charges were immediately filed against Epema. The case will be referred to the 
Commonwealth’s Attorneys office for review, police said.
