Annie Mae Toppins departed this life Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, in Mansfield, 
Ohio.

She was born June 1, 1921, in Tarboro, N.C., to the late Rev. John and Mary 
McNair. She was the widow of Edwards Toppins Sr. Mrs. Toppins moved to Norfolk 
in the early 1940s and remained here until her health failed at which time she 
moved to Mansfield, Ohio, in order that she could receive the love and attention 
needed and that was given to her by her children. While in Norfolk, she was a 
faithful member of the United House of Prayer. She had been employed by the 
Edgecomb County Schools before moving to Norfolk. While in Norfolk, she worked 
at the Norfolk Naval Base and retired from Norfolk General Hospital in the 
Housekeeping Department. 

She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Mary Render, Margaret Jones 
and Ann Toppins; a son, Edward Toppins Jr.; four grandchildren; and five great-
grandchildren. She will also be sorely missed by three sisters, Evang. Ida 
Carney, Evang. Carrie Jones and Ravie Steverson; and four brothers, Elder Toney 
McNair, Elder Wilbert McNair, Elder Henry McNair and Deacon Hector McNair. She 
was predeceased by a daughter, Beverly Toppins and three brothers, James Leroy 
Andrews, the Rev. J.P. McNair and Winfield McNair and a sister, Maebell Bell. 

A funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday in the Way of Truth COGIC on Maltby 
Avenue. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Riddick Funeral Service is in 
charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at 5569 Berry Hill Road, 
Norfolk.
