(Frenchie) Toscano, 77, of 4246 Huette Drive, a professional musician best known for playing bass viol and harp, and a regular member of the late Lou Saks Orchestra, died Wednesday in a hospital. Born in Italy, he lived in France many years and came to Norfolk in 1914. He was a son of Joseph and Mrs. Anna Penello Toscano. He played with the Norfolk Symphony Orchestra and in the pit bands of Norfolk vaudeville houses, including the Norva and Loew’s theaters. He also had played on local radio and television stations and with the WTAR Orchestra and Cavalier Hotel Orchestra. He had been a member since 1915 of the Norfolk Musicians Association Local 125 and had served either as executive board member, vice president, or secretary nearly every year since 1922 until he became ill in 1970. He had been a delegate to the American Federation of Musicians conventions and Virginia State Labor Council. He was a member of the Order of Sons of Italy, Roma Lodge 254. He served in the National Guard in World War I. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Antoinette Toscano Galano of Norfolk, nieces and nephews in France. The Rosary will be said in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments tonight at 7:30. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated in St. Pius X Catholic Church Friday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
