Truitt, master of the barge Maryland, formerly the General Slocum of New York, was drowned off the barge yesterday morning at 9 o'clock. In an attempt to step off the barge he lost his footing and fell between the side of the boat at the Pocomoke Guana Company's wharf, where the barge has been tied up for the last two months awaiting a cargo. Before the watchman could reach him he had disappeared. Sergeant Henderson, of the Berkley Ward police station was notified and with assistance of his men and others, the body was recovered a short while later. Coroner Kight of the city, viewed the remains and turned them over to Funeral Director Cox who is holding them subject to the orders of either the family or the owner of the barge, Peter Hagnan, Walnut Street, Philadelphia. Captain Truitt assumed charge of the barge about ten days or two weeks ago when he came here from Philadelphia The officers as well as the watchman, state that the man had been drinking very heavily Saturday and for several days past. He was also subject to fits. He is survived by four small children. His wife died about six weeks ago. An inquest will be held this morning. He was about 40 years of age. The owner of the barge is represented here by John Levins & Company.
