Mr. Twohy was a native of Norfolk. He attended Norfolk Academy and graduated from the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J., where he was the captain of the school football team. In 1946, he graduated from the Navy's ROTC program at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Following graduation, he served in the Pacific for the U.S. Navy. After retiring from the Navy, John worked for his father, Jack Twohy , in the sand-and-gravel business. He served a term as president of the Sand and Gravel Association of the State of Virginia. He founded Capital Concrete in Richmond area in the early '50s and subsequently relocated the business to Norfolk. He was a true pioneer in the ready-mixed concrete business, and remained active in Capital Concrete until his death. John was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and served as a member in the Greater Norfolk Corporation, as well as in numerous professional organizations. He was most proud of his commitment and service as a Board member of the Candii Program, which assists children living with AIDS. John is remembered by his numerous family, friends, and employees for his generosity, humor, and easygoing manner. He had a way of finding the silver lining and laughing about any dark cloud that came his way. He was fortunate to have shared a trip with his six daughters, their husbands and his wife of 50 years, Peggy, several weeks before his death. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Addington Twohy ; his six daughters, Merrick T. Murray and Jane T. Tirrell of Charlottesville, Va., Elizabeth A. Twohy , Dabney T. Napolitano, and Helen T. Whittemore of Virginia Beach, Margaret T. Devan of Basalt, Colorado, and their six husbands, and his 14 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Twohy Rector of Virginia Beach and his brother, Edward M. Twohy of Richmond. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Norfolk, by Father John J. Dorgan. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk. A Christian Wake service will be held this evening at 7 p.m. in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel.
