Underwood, 77, of the 1300 block of Emory Place, died July 11, 1998, in Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C. Mr. Underwood was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk, and was the son of the late Robert J. Underwood and Virginia Stark. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Mary Joe Underwood and his brother, Bob Underwood. Mr. Underwood, a 1939 graduate of Maury High School, served in the Navy and was instrumental in creating a golf course in North Africa during World War II. He was a PGA Life Master Golf Professional; managed, operated and was a pro at Memorial Park Golf Course in the 1950s; Stumpy Lake and Ocean View Golf courses in the 1960s and 1970s. He was the owner and operator of the Golf Shop in the 1950s and 1960s and again in the 1980s and 1990s and was the founder of the Golf Shop, Headquarters for Junior Golf Inc. Foundation. In 1973, he had the distinction of becoming the ninth person ever awarded "Master Professional" status. He was presently employed as a panelist for Golf Digest Magazine, evaluating golf courses throughout the country. In recent years, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of establishing a local National Junior Golf Association. He was a life member of the PGA, founding member of the Greenbrier Golf and Country Club, a past member of the Cavalier Golf and Country Club, the Harbor Club, Towne Point Club, Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, Foxfire Golf and Country Club, Naples, Fla. He was also a member of Circus Saints and Sinners, Norfolk; the Masonic and Khedive Temples; the Norfolk Sports Club; the Cosmopolitan Club; and the Executive Club of Norfolk. Survivors include his loving wife, Elaine Baker Eike Underwood of Norfolk; a daughter, Linda Welsh and her husband, Cornell, of Norfolk; a stepdaughter, Sandy Oates and her husband, Bill, of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, David and Glenn Welsh and his wife, Wendy, and Jody and Nikki Welsh; a great-granddaughter, Olivia Welsh; two step-grandchildren, Kim and Kevin Oates and his wife, Kim; and a step-great-granddaughter, Casey Elizabeth Oates. A church service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Talbot Park Baptist Church by Dr. Tim Dixon. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.
