It was lifted from the water, and Coroner Newton notified. He had it removed to the city morgue, where a jury of inquest viewed the remains which are in advanced stage of decomposition. It was that that the man had been connected with the Marine Corps, and Capt. Littleton W.T. Waller was notified. He came over promptly, but failed to identify the corpse. Subsequently the opinion developed that the man came from Suffolk, but this was probably speculation. Dr. Newton will today, unless the body is identified and claimed, have it buried at the expense of the city. Virginian-Pilot, March 23, 1899 The Drowned Man Buried The Coroner’s jury in the case of the man whose body was floated into Clyde Line dock Tuesday morning, yesterday rendered a verdict of accidental drowning, and the body was, as outlined in the Virginian Pilot yesterday morning, buried at the expense of the city. There was no identification, and no one came forward to claim the remains.
