Upshur. Captain Upshur had been in bad health for a long time and had gone to the Springs to recuperate. His family accompanied him and he had been there nearly two months. He was born on the Eastern Shore of Virginia about 18?9, but spent his boyhood days in Nansemond county. When the war broke out he joined Company F, Ninth Virginia Infantry, and served during the entire struggle with honor to himself and State, having been wounded in battle. About fifteen years ago he came to Norfolk and engaged in business, being at the time of his death president of the American Fertilizer Company. He was one of the best known men in this city, and has served as a member of the Select Council. He was a member of Ruth Lodge No. 89, A.F. & A.M., Norfolk United Royal Arch Chapter No. 1, Grice Commandery No. 16, Norfolk Lodge No. 1, Royal Arcanum, and Pickett-Buchanan Camp, Confederate Veterans. Captain Upshur was always ready to lend a helping hand, and was public spirited, always taking the lead in everything to the interest of Norfolk. The time and place of his funeral will be announced later. Commander Henry, of the Pickett-Buchanan Camp, has made detail of the following members of the camp to be in charge of Lieutenant Commander J.W. Thomas, Jr., to meet the remains of their deceased comrade, Capt. Caleb L. Upshur, which are expected to arrive by the Norfolk and Western Railroad tonight at 10 o'clock: Messrs George Chamberlaine, Wm. E. Foster, E.B. Freeman, T.W. Henderson, James W. Lee, W.W. Old, J.J. Phillips and Washington Taylor. ********************************************************************** Funeral of the Late C.L. Upshur The funeral of the late Captain C.L. Upshur took place from St. Paul's P.E. Church Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock and was very largely attended. The remains laid in state at the Masonic Temple all day and were viewed by a large number of people. Many floral designs, such as crosses, anchors, harp, gates ajar, etc., covered the handsome casket. Behind these was the hearse bearing the remains, on each side of which was six pallbearers, while in the rear were eight colored men. Then came a long string of carriages. Rev. A.S. Lloyd, rector of St. Luke's Church, met the corpse at the door and as the solemn cortege moved up the aisle read the "I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord" Rev.
