Upton-Victim of Hold-Up $1000. Reward Offered for Criminals Norfolk, Va. March 27-One thousand dollars reward for the arrest and conviction of the murderers of his brother, Richard R. Upton, who was shot and killed Tuesday night in Ghent, the most exclusive residence district of Norfolk, has been offered by L.J. Upton, Norfolk’s millionaire potato king. The police are working on the theory that Upton was killed by highwaymen after he had refused to give up his money and valuables. The highwaymen, however, failed to get either money, watch or a handsome diamond ring which the murdered man was wearing. Young Upton was shot and killed a stone’s throw of his apartment shortly before midnight. He ran for some distance after he had been shot and fell on the doorstop of F.U. Massengill, 820 Westover Avenue. Mr. Massengill was aroused by the shot and went to the front door, where he found the dying man. Upton was placed in an automobile and raced to the Protestant Hospital, but died before he reached there. He did not make a statement before he died. Immediately upon being informed of the murder of his brother, L.J. Upton sent for bloodhounds and two dogs picked up a trail near where young Upton fell and followed it over a course which led to the water front, where it was lost. Ensign Radcliff, U.S.N., who was going home when he heard the shot, arrived at Mr. Massengill’s home just as Mr. Massengill came to his door. The ensign upon seeming Mr. Massengill, raced after the two men whom he saw running toward the waterfront. He lost them in the dark and a few minutes afterwards he went back to where Mr. Upton lay. He described the men he chased as being without overcoats and wearing caps.
