Mercedees was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs Jessie Murray; husband, George Uzzell ; siblings, Sarah Ballard, Jessie Edmonds, Edward Murray; and two sons, Gregory Myers and Francis Myers. Merceedes leaves to cherish her precious memory her children, Mercedes Goodman, George Myers and wife Danielle, all of Norfolk, George Uzzell Jr., Sandra Swan and husband Sidney, Vernon Uzzell and wife Mignon, all of Washington, D.C.; sisters, Barbara Clinton of Norfolk, Leola Mason and husband John of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; countless nieces and nephews as well as her loyal and special friend, Rhomie Heck. A lifelong resident of Norfolk, Merceedes was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School. She received her undergraduate degree from Norfolk State College and her master's from Syracuse University. In 1980 she retired from Norfolk State as the acting director of the evening college after 27 years of service. A member of First United Presbyterian Church, Mercedees was an elder, trustee and chairperson of the church after school program. Mercedees was active in her community and also belonged to several organizations including the Thomas Cook Duplicade Club, NSU Faculty Women's Club, and Les Troujours Club. She paid careful attention to the needs of her family and friends and she will be sadly missed by everyone who knew and loved her. Her passing leaves a hole in our hearts filled only when we meet again. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in First United Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. The family will be accepting guests at her home on Carona Avenue, Norfolk. Viewing will be held today from 1 to 6 p.m. at Riddick Funeral Home.
