Virginian Pilot May17, 1997

Phelan Ruffin Vandeventer, 100, of the 3100 block of Shore Drive, died May 14, 
1997, in her home.
Mrs. Vandeventer was born in Norfolk and was a lifelong resident of the 
Tidewater area. She was the widow of Braden Vandeventer and the daughter of the 
late Kirkland and Mary Ruffin.
Mrs. Vandeventer was an active member of the Junior League of Norfolk and the 
Garden Club of Norfolk. She was also involved with the Women's Auxiliary at 
Norfolk General Hospital as well as Virginia Beach General Hospital. She served 
on the Altar Guild at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Norfolk and Eastern Shore 
Chapel Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach. Mrs. Vandeventer graduated from Maury 
High School and attended Hollins College.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary V. Saunders of Newport News; a son, Braden 
Vandeventer of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren, Robert M. Saunders Jr. of 
Richmond, Eliza Ruffin Vandeventer of Alexandria, Betsy Vandeventer of New York, 
N.Y., Thomas R. Vandeventer of Locust Valley, N.Y., William L. Vandeventer of 
Seattle, Anne V. Bowles of Virginia Beach; and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, May 16, 1997, at Elmwood 
Cemetery in Norfolk by the Rev. Mark Delcuze.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Eastern Shore Episcopal 
Church, 2020 Laskin Road Virginia Beach, Va. 23454. H.D. Oliver Funeral 
Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel, handled arrangements.
