Virginian Pilot August 31, 1900

The remains of Mr. Isaac Van Deventer, whose body was found mangled in the 
Seaboard Railroad yards in Portsmouth yesterday morning were brought to 
Undertaker Cox's establishment, where they will remain until the funeral 
today at 11 o'clock, which will be held at the grave in Magnolia Cemetery.  
The deceased leaves a mother, Mrs. Harriett Van Deventer, and two sisters, 
Mrs. John (Mattie) Wrenn and a younger sister, who was recently married, all 
of whom reside on Liberty street.  The deceased was 51 years old and well 
and favorably known by a large circle of friends.  His untimely death is 
mourned by many.

The funeral of the late Mr. Isaac VanDeventer, who was killed in Portsmouth 
Thursday morning, took place at the grave in Magnolia Cemetery yesterday 
morning at 11 o'clock.  The services were conducted by Rev. J.W. Mitchell, 
of the South Street Baptist Church, Portsmouth, and Rev. T.C. Skinner, of 
the Berkley Avenue Baptist Church.  The following gentlemen acted as 
pallbearers:  Messrs. George Wrenn, John M. Berkley, Lloyd Godwin, J.J. 
Johnson, Jesse Nichols and Capt. John Wrenn.
