All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Suzy Ward Fleming wardflemin@aol.com October 13, 2016, 12:29 am The Virginian Pilot Monday January 1, 1962 Frank Henry Van, 46, Norfolk TV Performer Norfolk, Frank Henry Vann, 46 well known in Norfolk Television circles, died in a Norfolk hospital Sunday at 5:10 a.m. A native of Norfolk, he attended school here and in Waynesboro. He became interested in dramatics in high school which led to him becoming affiliated with WGH as a singer in 1933. After being a radio announcer for WEED in Rocky Mount, N.C., he returned to Norfolk as an announcer with WGH. INJURED IN CRASH During this time, he was also active with the Norfolk Little Theater and the Old Dominion Theater Guild. In 1942 he left WGH to join the Army Air Corps, graduating in 1943 as a second lieutenant and a qualified multiengine pilot. A year later he became a first pilot on a B24 and was injured a short time later in an airplane crash, spending the remainder of World War II in a military hospital. Returning to Norfolk, he joined the staff of WTAR and when WTAR TV went on the air, he became the Tidewater’s first television announcer. BACK TO RADIO TV In 1951 he left television to open his own restaurant. He remained in the restaurant business until December 1959 when he became associated with WVEC radio and television. He was a son of Frank H. and Mrs. Evelyn Deans Vanderherchen. He was a member of Freemason Street Baptist Church and a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bernice Perry Vann, and an aunt, Mrs. Ethel Smith, both of Norfolk. A funeral service will be held in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Tuesday at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
