Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Tuesday, August 24, 1999 
Thelma Jordan Varner of the 6400 block of Whittier Drive, passed quietly and
gently into eternal rest on Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at her residence.

Mrs. Varner was a native of Princess Anne County, and was the daughter of the
late Walter M. and Grace Riddick Jordan. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist
Church. She attended Norfolk State College and completed her undergraduate
studies at Virginia Union University. She earned her master of arts degree from
Syracuse University. Mrs. Varner retired from the Norfolk Public School System
with 30 years of service. She had been a faculty member at Liberty Park,
Chesterfield Heights and Lindenwood elementary schools. She was a member of the
Beta Theta Zeta chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. An avid bridge player, Mrs.
Varner belonged to several bridge clubs in the area.

She leaves to cherish her memory a son, Cleveland E. Varner Jr.; four
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She will also be sorely missed by
several nieces and nephews, among them Thelma Louise Capps, Joseph L. Battle Jr.
and Ronald Keith Battle.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in Shiloh Baptist Church, 745 Park
Ave., by the Rev. John H. Foster. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Viewing
will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today in Riddick Funeral Service. The body will be
placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Zeta Phi Beta will hold a memorial
service at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home.
