All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Suzy Ward Fleming wardflemin@aol.com August 3, 2017, 10:50 pm Richmond Times Dispatch (Richmond, Virginia) Saturday, January 26, 1924 John N Vaughan Dies At Home In Norfolk War Veteran and Prominent Business Man to Be Buried Sunday Norfolk, Va., Jan 25.-Colonel John Norfleet Vaughan, founder of the cotton firm of Vaughan & Barnes, Inc., a veteran of the army of the South in the War Between the States, and for fifty years one of Norfolk’s most prominent citizens, died today at his residence here. He was 77 years old. Enlisting in the Southern forces at the outbreak of the intersectional strife when scarcely 15 years old, he was cited for conspicuous bravery on numerous occasions, and had been made a full colonel before General Robert E. Lee surrendered. Colonel Vaughan was forced to dispose of his interest in the cotton firm about a year ago on account of his health. He was a native of Hertford County, North Carolina, but had spent most of his life here. Besides his wife, Mrs. Annie Lawrence Vaughan, Colonel Vaughan is survived by three daughters, Mrs. D. Lawrence Gronore, Mrs. G. S. Friebus and Mrs. A. G. Bailey; six grandchildren, John Vaughan Groner, D. Lawrence Groner, Jr., Duncan G. Groner, Miss Nancy Friebus, Miss Jane Bruce and Miss Emily Bruce, and a great grandchild, little Marguerite Groner, all of Norfolk. Funeral services will be conducted here Sunday morning at 9 o’clock by the Rev. Beverley D. Tucker, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia, and the Rev. Francis C. Steinmetz, S. T. D. rector of Christ Episcopal Church, of which Colonel Vaughan was a member. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
