B9 BERKLEY - The remains of Capt. George Vinson were laid to rest Friday morning at 11 o’clock in Calvary cemetery with relatives and friends persent. His passing was the turning of another milestone in the history of Southside and the entire country. “Capt.” George as he was familiarly known, was a colorful character, having been in his younger days a great lover of sports. At his retirement from the Norfolk Navy Yard several years ago, he was the only Negro quarterman in the states. Funeral services were held Thursday evening at 8 p.m. at First Trinity AME Church with the pastor, the Rev. H. B. Threadgill officiating. The church was taxed to capacity and many persons remained on the outside in an attempt to hear the funeral services. It was a sad procession that passed through the streets several hours later led by the Berkley Brass and Reed Bank of which he was so fond. Sorrowing friends followed the remains, until he was interred on Friday. Leading the Elk officials were in attendance at the funeral services from all over the states. Veterans of the Spanish-American War, of which he was a member, kept guard over the body during the services. Obituaries were read and a musical number was rendered by Mrs. Minnie B. Footes.
