He was a native of Norfolk, born March 11, 1919. He was the son of the late Joseph A. Vita Sr. and Josephine Dinofa Vita. He was a 1937 graduate of Maury High School and successfully completed a business course at Norfolk College in 1938. In 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Aircorps Cadet Training Program. He later served in the 20th Air Force in the Pacific in the war against Japan. After pre- war civil service employment as a stenographer, he held positions with both the Seaboard Air-Line Railway and Norfolk Southern Railway. He is survived by his brother, Joseph A. Vita Jr. and sister-in-law, Theresa Mastracco Vita. He is also survived by a niece, Stephanie Salerno, her husband Dr. James Salerno, and their children Dana and Corey; a nephew, James Vita, his wife Karen, and their children, Jason, Ryan and Gregory; another niece, Elizabeth (Betsy) Cooper, her husband Erik, and their children, Hannah, Tanhen and Kacey; and many close and loving cousins and good friends. Because John considered himself very fortunate to have enjoyed many advantages growing up as a child, he believed fervently in the welfare of all children unable to help themselves. The family feels that John would be happy if those who knew him and who wish to give a donation in his memory would make the same to Saint Mary's Home for Disabled Children, 6171 Kempsville Circle, Norfolk, VA 23502, or to a children's charity of their choice. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel. A funeral Mass will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church by Father Joseph H. Metzger III. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
