Norfolk - Mrs. Mary Waites of 922 East Freemason street, widow of the late
Alexander Waites, died at a local hospital Monday after a brief illness.

Mrs. Waites, an active churchwoman for many years, and a well known resident of
this city, was born in Norfolk. She was a member of St. John’s AME Church but
funeral services were held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church
because at this time St. John’s is undergoing extensive renovations. The Rev. J.
R. Johnson, D.D., officiated. The Rev. C. E. Griffin of First Calvary Baptist
Church officiated.

She is survived by two sons, Russell of Washington DC, and Alex of New York; a
foster daughter, Mrs. Marian Wise of Norfolk; a niece, Mrs. George T. Alston of
Norfolk; two nephews, Carlyle and William Segar of Richmond; two grandchildren
and two great grandchildren.

Interment was in Calvary Cemetery with Riddick Funeral Home in charge of
arrangements.
