Walke, died at the family residence 847 Avenue A, Thursday, July 26 at 4:15 A.M. The deceased was a native of Mathews county but had been for nearly sixty-five years a highly respected citizen of this city and had endeared herself to a large circle of friends. She is survived by three sons, Messrs. Hiram, J. Arthur and Melvin Walke, and one daughter, Miss Osceola T. Walke. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, July 29, from St. John’s A.M.E. Church of which Mrs. Walke had been a member for over fifty years. The pastor, Dr. L. L. Berry, paid a glowing tribute to her fine qualities of womanhood and Christian character and the loyal service rendered until she was confined to her home by a lingering illness. Miss B. C. Smith, a close friend of the family, touchingly sang her favorite hymn, “Crossing the Bar,” and Mr. Gravatte Carr, “Face to Face.” Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.
