Often referred to as a Norfolk “landmark,” and invariably genial,he was for the past 35 years an employee of the bus terminal now located on Plume street. Known favorably by thousands of travelers, and before that by patrons of two Norfolk hotels, Mr. Walker became ill Thursday afternoon. Moved from his home Saturday morning to a local hospital, he succumbed at 8:15 that evening. Death was attributed to pneumonia. Funeral services were scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 20, at two o’clock at Bank Street Baptist Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Hale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The rites will be conducted by the Rev. J. B. Henderson A native Norfolkian, Mr. Walker would have been 78 years of age on Nov. 25. Last November 25 he was the jolly guest of honor at a birthday open-house given by his daughter. He was the son of the late John Anthony and Phyllis Dobbin Walker. At one time he was on the staff of the Monticello Hotel. Later he served for 16 years as head bellman of the Fairfax Hotel. During the hurricane of 1933, when the bus terminal was located at Randolph street and City Hall avenue, Mr. Walker was the only employee who remained after the area became flooded and was responsible for saving thousands of dollars in cash and tickets. He was marooned for hours on a counter in the terminal after his deed. His wife was the late Mrs. Mary L. Walker, who died in 1950. His survivors include an only child, Mrs. Grace Walker (Rufus) Bell Jr., and one great granddaughter, Valerie Stephanie Saddler. Mr. Walker was a member of the Eureka Lodge, the Lancaster Social and Beneficial Club, members of which will be pallbearers, the sons of Norfolk, and Bank Street Baptist Church. He joined the latter under the pastorate of the noted pulpiteer, the late Dr. Charles Satchell Morris Sr. An ardent fisherman in his more active years and a loyal workman, he rarely missed a day’s work, despite his advanced years, until his final illness.
