A lifelong resident of Chesapeake, he was the son of the late John G. Wallace III and Louisa Sargeant Wallace. He had attended both Virginia Polytechnical Institute and TCC before completing his carpenters apprenticeship. He was a certified welder and piledriver and journeyman carpenter. Professionally, he enjoyed a challenge and he prided himself on doing things the right way the first time. He was a member and business agent for the Local 303 Union in Portsmouth until its merger in 1984 with Norfolk and Newport News. He later became president of Local 613, and at the time of his death was serving as their vice-president. He initiated the Organizing Program for Local 613 and had served as a union member for 30 years. His love of the union and service to its members took him to the Washington area to find union work. For years he traveled back and forth every weekend between his family and his work. All the members of the Local 613 will greatly miss his devoted service and his sense of humor. He also was a member and past vestry associate with St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, and member of the Tidewater Blacksmith Guild. Survivors include his wife Elizabeth "Betty Gayle" Johnson Wallace of Chesapeake; their two sons, John G. Wallace V and Robert J. Wallace; his daughter, Elizabeth A. Wallace; his daughter-in-law, Sophie E. Wallace; and his grandson, Theodore G. Wallace. He is also survived by his brothers, Ben J. Wallace and George T. Wallace IV; a sister, Louisa W. Hammond; and a host of other family members and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth at 1:30 p.m. Saturday by the Rev. Jane F. Flaherty. Burial will follow at Magnolia Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Chesapeake Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. from 7 to 8:30 p.m. this evening. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth or the Oasis Program of Tidewater, 1020 High St., Portsmouth, VA 23704.
