G. W. WALLACE DIED LAST NIGHT Prominent Physician And Druggist Succumbs After Long Illness; Funeral Tuesday Dr. George W. Wallace, retired, a physician and druggist, aged 68 years, a member of one of Virginia's best known families and a descendant of the Wallaces of Scotland, died last evening at 7 o'clock at the residence, 238 Maple avenue, after an illness extending over a period of several years. After attending the preparatory schools of North Carolina and Virginia, he attended the university at Chapel Hill, N.C., graduated at the University of Virginia, and took post-graduate work in Bellevue hospital, New York. Dr. Wallace practiced his profession in Camden, N.C., but located in Berkley more than thirty years ago, where he continued his practice. He opened the first drug store on this side of the river, corner Berkley avenue and Chestnut street, known until recent years as Wallace's pharmacy, which was merged into a stock company, when the name was changed to the Slaymaker pharmacy. Retiring from business, he took up art, and several pieces from his brush adorn the walls of homes in this city. He was a Confederate veteran, serving in the command of Captain Bejeanette, as flag bearer at the age of 17, and was past commander of Neimeyer-Shaw Camp, Berkley. Dr. Wallace was a son of the late George T. and Mrs. Elizabeth Curtis Wallace of Norfolk county, was a brother of the late Capt. John Wallace of Wallaceton, Va. and is survived by his widow and two sisters, Mrs. B.W. Ferebee of Berkley and Mrs. Kate Riddick of Hertford, N.C. Few men enjoyed higher esteem than did Dr. Wallace. The funeral services will be conducted at Armstrong Memorial Presbyterian Church, of which he was a member, and official, Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, by the pastor, Rev. A.W. Shaw.
