Thomas Joseph Walsh, 85, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Norfolk, and one of the most widely known priests of the Diocese of Richmond, died Sunday at 11:30 p.m. at Georgetown Hospital, Washington, D.C. He had been pastor at Sacred Heart since June 1954. Father Walsh had been in residence at St. Anselm's Abbey, Washington, after hospitalization in Norfolk for a heart attack suffered here in August of this year. He had been anticipating a visit to Norfolk for Thanksgiving but on Saturday was stricken with another heart attack and was taken to the hospital. He came to Norfolk from St. Bede's Church, Williamsburg. * * * Among the diocesan posts Father Walsh held during his ministry of 34 years were diocesan director of the Newman Club and diocesan director for cemeteries. The Rev. Frank J. Hendrick, principal of Norfolk Catholic High School, who was made administrator of the church when it became apparent that Father Walsh's illness would be of long duration, expressed his personal sorrow today at the news. Father Walsh was born March 19, 1898 in Sommersville, Mass. and was the son of the late Owen Boyle Walsh and Mrs. Helene Crospy Walsh. Prior to his ordination to the priesthood, Father Walsh was an Xaverian Brother (Brother Owen) and while serving his church in that capacity was a teacher at St. Mary's Academy, Norfolk. He prepared for the priesthood at Belmont Abbey, North Carolina and was ordained at the Cathedral Church of St. John Latern in Rome, Dec. 21, 1929 by Cardinal Pompoli, Vicar General to Pope Pius XI. He also attended classes at Urban College and later studied at Cambridge University in England. Upon returning to the United States after his ordination, Father Walsh served as assistant pastor at St. Mary's, Norfolk; St. James Church, Falls Church; St. Francis, Staunton; Sacred Heart, Danville and was then named as pastor at St. Bede's. Williamsburg. * * * Father Walsh is survived by one sister, Sister Helen Virginia, Sisters of Notre Dame, at St. Michael's Convent, Hudson, Mass. Taking a keen interest in art, Father Walsh gave his art collection to Walsingham Academy, Williamsburg. The priest's body is to lie in repose at Sacred Heart Rectory, 520 Graydon Park, after 7 o'clock tonight The transferal of the body to Sacred Heart Church takes place Tuesday at 11:45 a.m. and this will be followed by rituals to be attended by the children of the school. Throughout the day and evening there will be a succession of honor guards of parishioners and attendants. * * * The Solemn Requiem Mass will be sung by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Carroll T. Dozier, dean of Tidewater Catholic clergy, and pastor of Christ the King Church, at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The Rev. John Riordan, pastor of Star of the Sea Church, Fort Monroe and the Rev. Paul T. Gaughan, Sacred Heart Church, will be sub deacons. The sermon will be by the Rev. Gabriel Maloriello, of St. John's Seminary, Richmond. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Norfolk.
