Ward, retired detective of the Norfolk Police Division, died yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.B. Walters, 703 West Twenty-sixth street, after a short illness. He was 72 years old, and had been a member of the detective force for many years prior to his retirement a few years ago, on reaching the prescribed age. Detective Ward was a lifelong resident of Norfolk, a son of the late Milton T. and Mrs. Elizabeth Rutter Ward. Besides his daughter, Mrs. Walters, he is survived by two sons, George A. and William M. Ward; a brother, A.C. Ward, all of Norfolk; a sister, Mrs. Rosa Dixon, of Isle of Wight county, and five grandchildren. Detective Ward was a member of Atlantic Lodge 2, A.F. & M.; Grice Commandery 16, Khedive Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. and the Police Relief Association. He also was a charter member and one of the three life members of the Sleuths' Club. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the funeral home of James V. Derry, 346 West Princess Anne road, by the Rev. J.S. Gresham, pastor of Colonial Avenue Methodist Church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. In respect to the memory of Detective Ward, the regular meeting of the Sleuths' Club, set for tomorrow afternoon, has been postponed to Sunday afternoon, March 10, at 2 o'clock, by order of J.F. Wood, president. Members of the club will attend the funeral in a body.
