A native of Berkley, she had lived in South Norfolk most of her life. She was the daughter of Mrs. Hope Townsend and the late Russell J. Townsend. She was associated with Townsend Brothers Fuel Co. for 23 years. A member of Chesapeake Avenue Methodist Church, she was in the Ladies Bible Class and the Woman's Society of Christian Service. She was a past matron of Friendship Chapter No. 57, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of Job's Daughters. For many years she was registrar of vital statistics in South Norfolk. Besides her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Danford Deshields of Roanoke; a sister, Mrs. Elsworth Fussell of Great Bridge; two brothers, Russell I. Townsend and Webster M. Townsend of South Norfolk; two grandchildren and several nephews and nieces. The body was removed to the Francis A. Gay Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
