"Uncle Ware" was about 23 years old when the Civil War started. He was born in Virginia and had never been out of Virginia in his life. For the past quarter of a century, "Uncle Ware" was the servant of Mrs. Augustus Post, of "Idalia" Ocean View Avenue and Tenth Street, Virginia Beach. He was active until a little more than a month ago. Always a servant and a faithful one, "Uncle Ware" saw too many changes in the world to be changed himself by circumstances. As to what his real name was, outside of the affectionate title of "Uncle Ware," even the old Negro himself was vague. I was all too long ago.
