She was 59. Miss Washington, a Norfolk native, taught at Ruffner Junior High School for 10 years and was a teacher and social studies department chairman at Granby High School for 21 years. She was one of the first black department chairman of a predominately white school in Norfolk. She received a bachelor's degree from the Norfolk Division of Virginia State College and received her master's degree from Hampton University. She studied with a delegation of educators from the Southeastern United States in six West African nations and was a contributing author to Project Africa. She worked throughout the years in various political campaigns, including one for the late William P. Robinson Sr., who was Norfolk's first black legislator since Reconstruction. She was a member of the Education Association of Norfolk and the Virginia and National Education associations and the Virginia and National Councils of Social Studies. She was also a member of First Baptist Church, Lamberts Point, where she served as past Woman's Day chairperson and teacher in the tutorial program for minimum competency testing. Survivors include her father, James Howard Washington, and a brother, Angelo Washington, both of Norfolk. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church, Lamberts Point, by the Revs. James O. Allen and Marvin L. Williams. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery .
