He was a native of Rural Retreat, and had been a resident of Norfolk for 57 years. He was a locomotive engineer, and had been connected with the Norfolk and Western Railway for 51 years. He was the husband of Mrs. Mary Winslow Wassum and son of the late Joseph H. and Eliza Howe Wassum. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. E. R. Philhower, Norfolk; one brother, Joseph Shipley Wassum, Norton, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Wassum was an elder of Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, and a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He was a veteran of the Spanish American War, serving as first lieutenant, Company E., Fourth Virginia Regiment. The body will be taken from the funeral home of E. Lee Cox & Brother, Westover avenue at Manteo street, to Park Avenue Presbyterian Church for funeral services Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock.
