WEBB, RETIRED PHARMACIST Joseph Allen ``Doc'' Webb, formerly of the 800 block of E. Indian River Road, retired owner of Webb's Pharmacy in Berkley and a long-time volunteer in the Berkley community, died July 21, 1992, in a Washington hospital. He was 81. Webb's Pharmacy was a landmark in Berkley for generations. In addition to selling medicines, school supplies and magazines, Webb's had a soda fountain, an after-school favorite with Berkley teens. In a 1988 interview with The Virginian-Pilot, Webb said his greatest joy was in helping youngsters by hiring them. He estimated he had hired more than 60 over the years. As a teenager, he had himself been hired as a pharmacy clerk, which led to his career. When he opened the pharmacy in 1947 at 1108 E. Liberty St., his was among six pharmacies in a thriving business district. He was relocated to 725-A E. Liberty in the 1970s by the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority. His was the last drug store in the community to close. He retired in November, after suffering a stroke. He was a Mason, a member and past treasurer of First Trinity A.M.E. Church and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. He was a former district chairman with Boy Scouts of America and was a volunteer with Southside Boys Club. He was the widower of Lucy C. Webb. Survivors include two daughters, Josephine W. Linyear of Chesapeake and Laura W. Smith of Temple Hills, Md.; a son, Walter C. Webb Sr. of Upper Marlboro, Md.; and six grand-children. The funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Mount Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Linwood Daughtry. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Friends may join the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Pretlow & Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake, and other times at 811 E. Indian River Road. The body will be placed in church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
