Norfolk Landmark Friday May 27, 1898  

Yesterday morning at 11 o'clock a host of sympathizing friends assembled at the 
residence of Mr. W.A. West to pay the last sad tribute of respect to the memory 
of his wife, Mrs. Mary E. West, who departed this life Wednesday morning. The 
obsequies were conducted by Rev. M.W. Butler. The following gentlemen acted as 
pallbearers: Messrs. S.B. Upton, Mack Jones, Alvah Petty, Walter Stevens, J.F. 
Steele and Willie Martin. The service was very solemn and impressive and it 
would not be exaggerated to say that there was not one present who did not shed 
tears. The floral tributes were numerous and handsome and evidenced the high 
esteem in which the deceased was held by the community, as well as their 
sympathy for the bereaved husband, parents and brothers. The remains were 
interred in Magnolia Cemetery.
