Virginian Pilot April 21, 1960

John Joseph Whalen, 88, died in a Norfolk hospital Wednesday at 1:45 a.m. after 
a short illness.
He was a native of County Waterford, Ireland and had been a resident of Norfolk 
since 1907. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Whalen.
Surviving are two daughters, Miss Florence Whalen and Mrs. R.J. Seiberlich; 
three sons, James M. Whalen, John Joseph Whalen Jr. and Edmund F. Whalen, all of 
Norfolk; two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Crowley, Dorchester, Mass. and Miss Julia 
Whalen, of County Waterford, Ireland; five grandchildren and five great-
grandchildren.
The body will be taken from H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments to Sacred Heart 
Catholic Church for a funeral service Friday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. 
Mayr's Cemetery.
The family will be at 110 Beverly Ave.
