Whillock, a lifelong resident of Norfolk, passed away June 2, 2004. Mr. Whillock served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was born Oct. 25, 1918. Tommy was a life member of the P.G.A. of America. He served as the past president of the Virginia Association of Golf Professionals. Tommy was also a past president of Tidewater Turfgrass Association and a 50-year member of the Golf Course Superintendents of America. Tommy was a lifelong member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Tommy was an accomplished golfer who played in many amateur and professional tournaments. In 1947, 1949 and 1950, he was the club champion at the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club. He held the amateur course record there of 63 for many years. In 1959 he finished second in the National Superintendents Championship in Houston, Texas. Tommy was also an accomplished teacher. Over the years he gave instruction to thousands of junior and beginner golfers. In the mid-50s Tommy was selected to be the new pro-superintendent at Eagle Haven Golf Club on the Amphibious Base at Little Creek, Va. His team constructed the front nine and additional nine was added a few years later. He served as pro-superintendent at Eagle Haven for more than 17 years. After his retirement from Eagle Haven, Tommy served as head professional at the City Park Golf Course in Portsmouth, where he retired. Tommy loved being around golf and golf courses. Mr. Whillock is survived by many nieces and nephews throughout the United States. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Newport Avenue in Norfolk. The family would especially like the thank all the staff of Pinewood Retirement Home and the Harbour Point Rehab for all the care given to Mr. Whillock.
