Whitaker Sr., 75, of the 4100 block of Marblehead Drive, died March 3, 2002, in Hampton VA Hospital. Born in Scotland Neck, N.C., Mr. Whitaker graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. He was a retired merchant seaman and chief cook from the Naval Hospital and also retired from the Army. He received the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, and United Nations Service Medal. He was a member of The Way of The Cross Church, Norfolk. The widower of Mary W. Jones, he is survived by two daughters, Loretta A. Peguese and husband, Fred of Virginia Beach, and Karen Adams and husband, James of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons, John H. Whitaker Jr. of Virginia Beach and Anthony P. Whitaker and wife, Bernadette of Dale City, Va.; four sisters, Cornelia Whitney, Christine Hayes and Maxine Lewis, all of Virginia Beach and Bernice Howard of Washington, D.C.; five brothers, Horace Lee Whitaker of Virginia Beach, Joseph Whitaker of Pennsylvania, James Whitaker of Suffolk, Raymond Whitaker of Norfolk, and Andrew Whitaker of Columbia, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a score of nieces, nephews, other relatives and special friends. He was predeceased by a daughter, Beverly Ann Whitaker ; his parents, Cornelia and Thurston Whitaker ; and his grandparents, Henry Whitaker and Emily Hall Whitaker . A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at The Way of The Cross ELIM, 2800 Chesapeake Blvd., Norfolk, by Bishop Hines. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends for remembrance and visitation Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at P.G. Thomasson Funeral Services Inc., Bonney Road Chapel, and all other times at 4120 Marblehead Drive, Virginia Beach.
