Charles W. White, Widely Known in Theater, Dies

NORFOLK - Charles William White, 72, widely known stagehand at the Center 
Theater and City Auditorium, died unexpectedly yesterday at 3:55 p.m. in a 
Norfolk hospital. A native of Norfolk, he had resided here all of his life, 
making his home at 3037 Grandy Ave., Ballentine Place.
Mr. White had been associated with the theatrical world for the past 60 
years, having joined a theatrical troupe at the age of 16. He was associated 
with the old Academy of Music in 1906 and worked with it for several years. 
In 1918 he became a member of the troupe of the Metropolitan Opera Co. in 
New York and toured the country with it for a number of years. He had worked 
in every theater in Norfolk at one time or another, most recently with the 
Center Theater and the City Arena, in Norfolk, and with several of the large 
theaters in New York City.
He was the son of Obey and Mrs. Josephine Williams White and the husband of 
Mrs. Nora Hay White. He was a member of the I.A.T.S.E. Union, Local 72, 
Norfolk, for the past 55 years, and at the time of his death was its 
president.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Lloyd C. White, of 
Norfolk; a sister, Mrs. Nancy Morgan, of Norfolk; and several nieces and 
nephews.
The body was removed to the Derry-Twiford Funeral Home, where funeral 
arrangements are pending.
