His funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at Queen Street Baptist Church, where he had held life-long membership, with the pastor, the Rev. R. A. Laws, officiating. The young man was well remembered in this city as having been, as a school lad, one of the pioneer carrier-agents of the Journal and Guide. With this newspaper he built up a warm association and left an unimpeachable reputation. Mr. White, who was unmarried, was a native of this city, the son of Lewis and Mrs. Martha White with whom he made his home. His father is a former Norfolk Western Railroad pier brakeman, having retired in 1935 after 51 years service with the company. The attack which proved fatal to the teacher was one of a number of heart strokes he had suffered recently. He was built of an extraordinarily large physique, with an estimated weight of approximately 400 pounds at his time of death. A graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, class of 1929, the young man had furthered his education at St. Paul’s Polytechnic Institute (the former St. Paul’s Normal and Industrial Institute) and Virginia State College. The deceased possessed a high degree of musical talent, and was frequently sought after to serve as a church organist. In addition to teaching in the Eastern Shore counties of Northampton, Accomac and Buckingham, he served church choirs in that section and in his home city as well. Possessed of a fine disposition and high character, he moved easily in church and civic circles. At his funeral condolences were read from the teachers association of the Eastern Shore counties, and the African Baptist Church at Cheriton, along with numerous others. The survivors include his parents, five sisters, Miss Eva White, Norfolk; Mrs. Jeanette Joynes, Cape Charles; Mrs. Mary Harris, Norfolk; Mrs. Helen Diggs, Suffolk; Miss Bessie White, Norfolk, and one brother, Walter White, of Portsmouth. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were in charge of B. F. King, undertaker. Out of town persons attending the funeral services included the Rev. M. T. Boone of Maxwell, VA; Mrs. Virginia Henry and Mrs. Macon Cicero of Cheriton, Va; Mrs. Ida Jackson, Newport, RI; and J. Joyner of Whitesville VA.
